Mayurbhanj district of Odisha is a tribal-dominated region with a rich cultural and linguistic heritage. Santali, one of the major tribal languages of India, is taught at Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University, Baripada, which is the only university in Odisha offering higher education in Santali. The teaching of Santali at the University began in 2012 under the self-financing mode, and since 2017 it has been recognized as a regular academic programme. At present, the Department of Santali offers M.A., Ph.D., and Certificate Courses. So far, nearly 530 students have successfully completed their studies from the Department.
The University also provides Santali Certificate Courses through the distance learning mode, enabling learners from different regions to study the language. The Department is actively engaged in research on various aspects of Santali language, literature, culture, and tribal studies. In the years ahead, the scope and significance of Santali studies are expected to expand further. We are proud that many of our alumni are now serving as teachers and academicians in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions, contributing significantly to the promotion and development of Santali language and culture.
