With the increasing emphasis on environmental sustainability, Paradip Port Authority has responded to ensure that port operations are environmentally sustainable and committed to improve environmental performance through focused action on the following areas; air quality, energy conservation and climate change, waste management, noise management, and water management (both consumption and quality).
A further environmental concern is the need to reduce greenhouse gases. Sources of air pollution are a concern in Port sector because of the potential harm to both port users and the health of people living in close proximity to the port. The port has taken up various schemes under the Green Port initiative programme for better environment.
Some initiatives have also been taken up by Paradip Port Authority for improvement of environmental quality of Paradip locality, few important ones are furnished as below;
Currently, Port has a total 55 KMs of concreted/blacktopped major road network inside Port limits.
The C.C. drains along the 55 KM internal roads are cleaned on a continuous basis. Works of drain cleaning amounting to Rs. 1.16 Cr annually are being carried out to clean the drains alongside the internal roads.
The 55 KM internal road surfaces are continuously cleaned, and physical removal of scum is done through contracts amounting to Rs. 2.43 Cr annually.
Currently, the Port engages Mobile Water Tankers for sprinkling water on the roads to suppress dust from plying of heavy vehicles as well as watering the plants. Water sprinkling under 03 contracts at a total cost of Rs. 2.0068 Cr is being carried out in the Port area. Around 180 trips of water tankers per day with 10 KL capacity each are engaged for sprinkling water on roads inside the Port. The treated water from STPs is used for supplying water to the water tankers. Operators also separately engage water tankers for sprinkling.
Procurement and hiring of 04 Mobile Mist Canons to mitigate ambient fugitive dust emission during cargo handling operations at manually handled berths. The newly procured 02 Mist Canons also have sprinkler facilities suitable for road sweeping activities.
Procurement of 02 Conveyorized Road Sweeping Machines inside the port prohibited area to remove thick scum on road surfaces.
Functioning of 09 major settling ponds and additional settling tanks inside the Port with well-connected drain facilities for recycling wastewater through STPs.
Establishment of 03 STPs with a combined capacity of 6.5 MLD for treatment of rainwater and drain water from the Port and urban habitation.
Covering of stockyards with tarpaulin during intermittent storage. The Port also has an SOP for cargo handling at stockyards, outlining practices such as tarpaulin covering, threshold limits on stockpile height, and related measures.
Truck Tyre Washing Systems (04 nos.) have been installed at Port Gates (Gate No. 1, 2 & 3) to prevent carrying dust outside the harbour area.
Bi-weekly Air Quality Monitoring and Quarterly Environmental Monitoring by CSIR-IMMT, a recognized Government agency, have been sanctioned for a 3-year period at costs of Rs. 2.20 Cr and Rs. 2.65 Cr, respectively.
05 Mechanical Road Sweeping Machines are engaged to clean road surfaces, covering a total of 200 KMs per day (@ 40 KM per sweeper).
Renovation, maintenance, and replacement of Net Barriers over 3.5 KMs with a height of 12 meters have been undertaken at the harbour periphery to prevent fugitive dust dispersal outside the Port area.
Green Belt Development: Paradip Port has planted 12.5 lakh plants in and around Paradip over the last decade. Small vacant spaces inside the Port are also being utilized for plantation. Additionally, a massive plantation programme involving 40,000 seedlings for 2025–26 is being executed through OFDC Ltd., and the work is in progress.
Gradual conversion of manual handling berths into mechanized berths and shifting to closed conveyor systems to reduce fugitive emissions.
20,000 sq. mts. of cargo stockyards have been concretized, and work is in progress for another 20,000 sq. mts. This will prevent waterlogging and enable efficient management of surface water runoff from cargo stockyards.
The work for installation of a Mechanized Dust Suppression System on roads from Gate No. 01 to Gate No. 02 inside the port prohibited area at a cost of Rs. 7,06,00,000 has been awarded and is scheduled for execution by June 2025.
To reduce ambient dust, a designated two-wheeler parking area with roof has been created near Gate No. 03.
Paradip Port has a Tier-1 Oil Spill Response Facility to address oil spill-related issues.
Reduction in energy consumption by replacing old street lights with LED lights.
A separate Environment Cell has been established with dedicated staff.
Besides this, PPA has developed and maintaining various Parks, Gardens, and Nurseries in and around the township for the benefit of Port Users, Employees and Public. Avenue plantation is made alongside the main roads connecting to different colonies of the Port. Port monitors the level of Environmental pollution regularly and takes required preventive measures to retain the pollution level within the permissible limit. Paradip Port Trust is making relentless effort in its endeavour to achieve the ultimate objective of a healthy and eco-friendly environment in Paradip locality.
